About our Work

The DIRFT site at Daventry - a typical site where we have a chaplain.

We are a Christian based agency working in the dynamic and diverse world of work and the economy.
These are our objectives:

  • To offer independent pastoral support to people at work, regardless of their gender, orientation, race, religion or of no faith by regular visiting of places of work.

  • Using our knowledge of and insight into the sub-regional economy we will develop projects that will serve people, for example, through working for economic and social regeneration.

  • To develop as a resource for churches, congregations, ministers and church leaders interpreting the world of work and the economy to the churches. For more resources go to our WorkAware pages.

We receive some funding from the churches but our day to day work is largely financed by our clients who value that 'something extra' that a workplace chaplain can bring. Our primary task is to listen and to care. People at work can speak to our chaplains about personal issues or matters at work in confidence. We offer this service to people at all levels in an organisation.

The chaplain is somebody who is present in the organisation, develops an understanding of its methods and the particular pressures that may affect operations. The chaplain may be your 'sounding board' or 'safety valve'. Sometimes the chaplain is your 'signpost', helping people access specialist help. If someone asks us to make an introduction to a leader of their own faith community, we will help them.

OUR HISTORY

CWMWW was formed to continue the work of Coventry Industrial Mission established by Coventry Cathedral & the Diocese of Coventry in 1962. The commercial and industrial landscape has changed enormously since then and the organisation has continually changed to reflect the needs of people at work. It became known as Mission in the World of Work until 1990 when the name changed again. We are now known as WORKCARE Coventry & Warwickshire and continue to be an ecumenical Christian Agency of Churches Together in Coventry and Warwickshire.

WORKCARE Coventry & Warwickshire (operating as Mission in the World of Work or MWW for short) is an ecumenical Christian Agency of Churches Together on Coventry and Warwickshire.  CWMWW was formed to continue the work of Coventry Industrial Mission established by Coventry Cathedral & the Diocese of Coventry in 1962.

FAITH COMMUNITIES REGENERATION PROJECT

Kay Aldersley – Regeneration Support Officer

Welcome to the “Faith Communities Regeneration” Project, working with the faith communities in Nuneaton, Bedworth and North Warwickshire and to “Good Neighbours in Coventry”, a Project funded by West Bromwich Building Society (WBBS) working with the churches and community in Longford, North Coventry.

The FAITH COMMUNITIES REGENERATION PROJECT has been in existence since July 2004.  Its aim is to encourage and support churches to utilise their buildings for the good of the wider community in offering a ‘meeting place’ and activities.  During the life of the Project there have been lots of buildings receiving a ‘face lift’ or a complete refurbishment. This has included new kitchens, toilets, disabled access, floors, windows – you name it and it’s happened!  Such projects can only usually take place as a result of successful funding bids and the Project works very closely with our partners Warwickshire Community and Voluntary Action (CAVA) and North Warwickshire Council for Voluntary Services (CVS).  As a result of the up-graded buildings there has been a significant increase in community activities and people visiting faith community buildings.

Church and community groups rely on the many hours of time given by an army of volunteers.  Our volunteers are involved in groups for children, young people, people 50+, community cafes and hours spent on writing funding applications, to name but a few!  The list is endless!  The Project works closely with the Volunteer Centres in Nuneaton and Bedworth and North Warwickshire.

The Project runs FACE=Faith+Action+Community+Enterprise training events twice a year and our quarterly newsletter ‘Look North’ highlights events and ‘good news’ stories in North Warwickshire and North Coventry.

GOOD NEIGHBOURS IN COVENTRY is a relatively new Project.  It began in April 2008 when West Bromwich Building Society (WBBS) funded work in Coventry to the tune of £10,000.  After numerous meetings with local ministers, the faith community and potential partners we identified Longford as an area where such a piece of work could take place.  Working with Fr Paul Burch (St Thomas, Longford), Rev Mike Edwards (Salem Baptist Church) and Pastor Paul Whitehead (Union Place Baptist Church) the Project is seeking to engage the wider community in accessing the church buildings for worship and a range of activities.

The Project is working closely with a newly-opened Art Gallery (Fishbone Gallery) in Longford and plans to offer adult and family learning, giving local people the opportunity to ‘tune into their arty side’.

Our partners in Coventry include the Voluntary Action Coventry who support us in identifying funding for specific purposes.

MULTI-FAITH PROJECT

Revd Robert Maloney, ordained as a URC Minister on 1st September will work with us on a part time basis as project leader for this exciting and challenging development in our activity.  We remain a Christian-based organisation; our key sponsors are the member Churches of CTCW (Churches Together Coventry and Warwickshire). Robert will be meeting with all our chaplains, Board members, sponsoring churches and client organisations to discuss the implications of becoming much more multi-faith conscious, and also of the potential for appointing members of the other major faith communities in our region as associate chaplains, always on the same basis as our existing team members.

Chaplains are there for everyone irrespective of their faith. They will advise on faith matters and when appropriate always refer to an approved person from the enquirer’s faith community to give the necessary support. This is a challenging and exciting project and fits well with the diversity and respect agendas now the norm.
